Funeral motorcade of Police Officer Bryan J. Durman. Music: “Greater Love” album title song performed by Jemimah and the Monaco Symphony in Lexington, Kentucky. Tuesday, May 4, 2010 funeral motorcade on Main Street at N. Limestone St., Lexington, Ky. Officer Durman, age 27, was killed by a hit and run driver on Thursday, April 29, 2010 while on duty with the Lexington Fayette Urban County Government Division of Police. He was also formerly a Sargent in the US Air Force before joining Lexington’s Division of Police. Weeks prior to this tragedy, he was commended for saving the life of a citizen. He leaves a wife and four-year old son, his family, many friends, and thousands of brothers and sisters in law enforcement represented by official police vehicles from practically every city and town in Kentucky. Lexington will never forget you. The three-mile long funeral motorcade began at approximately 2:20 pm, at the Southland Christian Church in neighboring Jessamine County, proceeded to Fayette County turning onto Man ‘O War Blvd., to Richmond Road inbound to downtown Lexington’s Main Street, South onto Broadway which becomes the Harrodsburg Road leading directly to the cemetery across the street from Southland Christian Church where the fallen hero was laid to rest with full military honors beginning about 4:30 pm. Thousands of citizens lined the streets along the fifteen-mile motorcade route to honor Officer Durman and show support for his family. Many citizens pulled over …

Take a ride on a 60 foot electric trolleybus along Main street to Broadway. For those of you from outside the country who don’t know, the song the guys at the front of the bus are singing is Canda’s national anthem, it was in honor of a gold medal in womens hockey. Also I’d like to thank everyone on board for not staring at the camera too much as this can easily ruin vids of larger more crowded buses, and no the camera was not hidden, people here just aren’t creeped out as much by being recorded as they are in the US.

“Willow Weep for Me” is a popular song composed in 1932 by Ann Ronell. Ronell was born in Omaha, Nebraska, studied music with Walter Piston, and was married to producer Lester Cowan. The couple had no children. Ronell was, along with Dorothy Fields, Dana Suesse, and Kay Swift, one of the first successful Hollywood and Tin Pan Alley female composers or librettists. She cowrote Disney’s first hit song, “Who’s Afraid of the Big Bad Wolf?” (1933) with Frank Churchill for the cartoon of the same name. She wrote the lyrics and music for the Broadway musical Count Me In (1942) She wrote songs for movies including Champagne Waltz (1937) and Blockade (1938) and wrote the scores for movies including the Cowan produced The Story of GI Joe (1945), the film adaptation of the Weill/Nash musical One Touch of Venus (1948), and the Marx Brothers Love Happy (1949). She served as musical director for Main Street to Broadway (1953). She was nominated for Best Song, “Linda,” and with co-composer Louis Applebaum for Best Score, for her work on The Story of GI Joe. Ronell was romantically involved with George Gershwin at the time she wrote her most famous song, “Willow Weep for Me” and speculation in the New York City composer community is that Gershwin actually wrote the song and gave her the copyright as a gift. Earlier in the day, the Salem Ralley sported large crowds with public speakers. As the hours passed, remnants of citizens stood post at the downtown Main street and Broadway intersection. Protestors primarily gathered in the public areas in front of Marion County Courthouse, across from Salem City Hall, and in front of the Courtyard Coffehouse, a privately owned small business. This video was shot in the afternoon, showing that the movement to raise awareness and the motorist support continued throughout the day. (Sorry I didn’t think to shoot video until later in the day… and sorry about the shaky quality. I’m a terrible cameraman, but you can at least get an idea of the event.)

City of Squares-Cambridge, Massachusetts

Located just two miles from Boston and joined by two bridges, you find Cambridge, Massachusetts. Home to the world-renowned Harvard University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Lesley College, Cambridge is a vibrant and interesting city filled with history, art and academia.

What you may not know about Cambridge is that it is often referred to as “A City of Squares.” There are six squares in Cambridge, and here is some information about each one of them and where they are located in Cambridge:

Central Square. This is an area in Cambridge centered around the junction of Massachusetts Avenue, Prospect Street and Western Avenue. Lafayette Square, formed by the junction of Massachusetts Avenue, Columbia Street, Sidney Street and Main Street, is also considered a part of the Central Square area.
Inman Square. This is a neighborhood in Cambridge. It lies north of Central Square, at the junction of Cambridge, Hampshire, and Inman Streets near the Cambridge–Somerville border.
Kendall Square. This is a neighborhood in Cambridge, with the “square” itself at the intersection of Main Street, Broadway, Wadsworth Street, and Third Street. It may also refer to the broad business district that is east of Portland Street, northwest of the Charles River, north of MIT and south of Binney Street.
Harvard Square. This is a large triangular area in the center of Cambridge, at the intersection of Massachusetts Avenue, Brattle Street, and John F. Kennedy Street. Adjacent to the historic heart of Harvard University, Harvard Yard, and the Square (as it is called locally) functions as a commercial center for Harvard students, as well as residents of western Cambridge and the inner western and northern suburbs of Boston.
Porter Square. This is a neighborhood of Cambridge located around the intersection of Massachusetts Avenue and Somerville Avenue, between Harvard and Davis Squares. The Porter Square Station serves both the MBTA Red Line and the Commuter Rail. The station is approximately 200 yards from the border with Somerville, so “Porter Square” inhabitants include residents of both cities.
Lechmere Square. (pronounced “leech-meer”) This square is located at the intersection of Cambridge St. and First St. in East Cambridge. It was originally named for the Colonial-era landowner Richard Lechmere, a Loyalist who returned to England at the beginning of the American Revolution. His lands were later seized by the new American government. The shoreline is shown as “Lechmere’s Point” on Revolutionary War maps, and was the landing point for British troops en route to the Battles of Lexington and Concord.

Each square has its own unique personality, and you often find people are partial and loyal to one square. They tend to socialize, shop and “hang out” in their favorite square. However, when you visit Cambridge, Massachusetts, please feel free to take in the uniqueness of all its squares and what they have to offer. They all have art, restaurants, music venues and, of course, interesting people milling about from all over the world. Maybe you, too, will leave with your own favorite square in Cambridge!

Today I went to the Broadway/Cambie and West Georgia skytrain stations, city hall, Cambie and Main Street police stations, Smithe Street Courthouse, Art Gallery at Robson, Victory Square and the 222 Main street courthouse. About 4 hours of walking and announcing. Oh, and yes, this construction site. These are always good locations to drum up business.
