Building history

Movie house

The architectural firm Rapp and Rapp, famous for its theater buildings, designed the Italian Renaissance-style building. The building was variously described by the newspapers as being of the French Renaissance or Northern Italianate style. The Paramount was considered, at its opening, to be the largest and most lavish theater for a city the size of Portland. Originally opened as the Portland Publix Theatre, a vaudeville venue in March 1928, the name changed to the Paramount Theater in 1930, as the owners had a contract to run Paramount films locally. The building continued to show films until 1972, after which it hosted concerts.

Visitors were greeted by a 65-foot (20 m) high “Portland” sign above the Broadway Marquee, which contained approximately 6,000 theatrical lights. The sign read “Paramount” from 1930-1984. The theatre was designed with many foyers and lobbies. The main entrance to the auditorium boasted huge french-paned windows facing east and south, covered with velvet drapes. The walls were covered with mirrors and marble, and the floors were covered with expensive carpets. The furnishings had been purchased from a French museum and private collections. The concessions stand was made of marble and stretched nearly half the length of the main lobby. It was described as the “longest candy counter in the West.”[citation needed]

The lobby was lit with huge crystal chandeliers. Nearly ,000 had been spent on them. The largest had a span of nearly 8 feet (2.4 m), weighing over 1700 pounds and containing 181 lights. Currently, the largest chandelier has 137 candle bulbs, and the smaller ones each have 124 bulbs.

The top row of the balcony seats was six stories above the stage. Small staircases from the main lobby led to the balcony area which contained men’s and ladies’ lounges. The men’s lounge was equipped with fireplaces, telephones, radios, phonographs and attendants. The women’s lounge was furnished with dressing tables, mirrors, maids and hairdressers. There was also a Louis XV Ampico-Knabe grand piano in ivory and gold available to the women.

The walls of the auditorium were elaborately decorated with murals and near the front of the stage, small balconies were hung with drapes which hid the pipes from the ,500 Wurlitzer organ. This organ was stored under the stage and was mounted on a platform that could be raised to the level of the stage at the touch of a button. Two organists could play simultaneously.

The seating capacity of the theater was boasted to have been 4000 seats by the newspaper ads of the day. Their ads promised “An acre of seats”. Actually, the seating capacity was in the neighborhood of 3000.

The ceilings were of a special design. The ceiling panels were suspended from the roof of the building and jutted out toward the sides of the auditorium, leaving a small hollow next to the wall. A series of electric light bulbs were set in the hollow, not visible to the audience. Their glow fell on the patrons indirectly, giving the effect of space and freedom.

Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall and Heathman Hotel

The stage had an orchestra pit that could be raised and lowered and hold a 30-piece orchestra. There was also a “flying” stage which could be raised or lowered or moved about above the main stage.

In July 1928, the theatre appeared on the front page of the newspaper, figuring in an unusual robbery. A young man, Robert Nolan, had lived in Southern California for a time. While living there, he appeared as an extra in the movie, “Wheel of Chance.” He had moved back to Oregon and when he saw that the movie was showing at the Portland theatre, he decided to go see himself on the “silver screen.” While he was in the lobby, he saw two people walking by carrying the day’s receipts. As he was watching the movie, the idea formed that he should take a chance before he left Portland to acquire a little extra money. He went to the box office and held up the attendants for 76. He was apprehended several days later, having spent all but .50 of the money on bootleggers and drinking parties.

During the Great Depression, the theatre hired roving musicians and a “psychic” to entertain in the lobby before movies, in an effort to attract patrons to the theatre. Admission was 50 cents at this point, down 10 cents from opening night.[citation needed]

By 1936, the theater had been sold to the Evergreen chain, in conjunction with John Hamrick, and between them, they owned eight movie theatres in Portland.

In 1965, the exterior and interior of the building were in a decline, and in September of that year, part of the cast iron balcony which faces Park Avenue (a 150 lb (68 kg) piece of gingerbread), gave way and fell to the pavement below. The break was along an old fracture line caused by a previous earthquake. The iron had rusted over time without proper maintenance. In August 1970, chunks of the masonry on the corner of Main and Broadway gave way. Two huge blocks, 350 lb (160 kg) each, fell from the facade, one of them crashing into the main marquee below. The masonry blocks were said to have fallen due to the age of the building.[citation needed] The owners did not seem to be putting any money into maintenance. The theatre was offered for sale in December 1970[citation needed] and was purchased by John Haviland in 1971, who owned the Park-Haviland Hotel. The theatre was leased to Tom Moyer, owner of a chain of movie theaters.

Concert venue

Haviland felt that it was uneconomical to operate a 3000 seat theater in the days of television. The last regular film showing was on August 15, 1972 (Dr. Phibes Rises Again with Vincent Price).

In 1972, a Seattle-based partnership was formed, Paramount Northwest. They leased the theatre for three years, with an option for six more, and promoted live concerts. Heart played there as part of the “Catch a Rising Star” series (which included Tom Petty and Elvis Costello, among others), for the admission price of 92 cents (promoted by local radio station KGON, 92 FM). Queen, Santana, Blue yster Cult, Joe Walsh, Pat Benatar, and many other major bands also played there. John Haviland still owned it and claimed that the rent was “1/10th of what it should be for such a theatre”: 00 per month. In December 1972, Haviland proposed a state-run gambling casino on the property, claiming he was losing more than he could afford on the Paramount.

In March 1975, Haviland conducted an auction during which he sold off all the statuary, pipe organ, antique furniture, 16th century suit of armor, mirrors, China, Oriental rugs, original oil paintings, lighted gold-leaf music stands, and pianos (there were 3 grand pianos); basically everything that was not attached to the walls or floors. Haviland was trying to drive out the rock-concert promoting tenants and went into a legal dispute with Paramount Northwest over the lease. He felt that the young people targeted by the concerts were not spending enough money and were destroying the theatre. Haviland won a court case preventing Paramount Northwest from renewing their lease option. Haviland intended to renovate the theatre and offer a higher-class type of entertainment, including dinner theatre.

In August 1976, the Paramount Theatre was sold to Seattle-based West Coast Theatres company. The owner offered to sell the property to the city for 4 million dollars in 1980, but the city council had to decide whether to renovate the Paramount Theatre or build a performing arts center from the ground up.

The City of Portland attempted to buy out the owner in 1982, but talks broke down. The city council finally voted to condemn the building. A condemnation hearing jury determined that the city would have to pay the owner .1 million dollars as compensation for the building.

The theater cost 0,000 to build in 1928. As of October 2006, “The Schnitz” was assessed by Multnomah County at more than ,000,000.00.

Restoration

The Schnitzer at night

In 1972, the Portland City Council voted to give the building Landmark Status, over the objections of John Haviland, the owner. The landmark status applied only to the exterior of the building. Many people felt that the interior of the building was more valuable architecturally. The building (as the Paramount Theatre) was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1976.

A major renovation began in September 1983, restoring the building to much of its original opulence. The interior of the auditorium, however, was painted one neutral color, rather than restoring the murals that had decorated it. Portland residents Arlene and Harold Schnitzer contributed generously to the completion of the initial phase of the Portland Center for the Performing Arts. The one-year, million renovation involved repairing, recasting or replacing much of the theatre’s ornate interior as well as making it comfortable and safe for today’s audiences and performers.

The landmark 65-foot-tall “Paramount” sign was removed on March 18, 1984, to be used by Ballard Sign Company of Salem as a model for a new replica which would restore the wording used originally (from 1928-1930): “Portland”, appropriate for the building’s change in use as well as being historically fitting. The new replica sign, with neon letters five feet tall, was attached to the building on Sep. 4, 1984. The theatre re-opened later the same month.

The concert hall now plays host to a variety of presentations including classical, jazz, pop, rock, folk and gospel music, dance, theatre, travel films, conferences, and weddings.

The concert hall features:

Seating for 2,776 in orchestra level and balcony.

94 x 32-foot (9.8 m) stage with 54 x 32-foot (9.8 m) traditional proscenium.

Orchestra pit for 15; a choir loft.

Dressing rooms for 90.

Portable, flexible acoustical shell.

Design highlights: wool carpeting designed in Portland and loomed in New Zealand; original chandeliers renovated and fitted with new crystal in rococo-style lobby; original ornate interior repaneled, recast and replaced; classic colors of warm neutrals and teal replaced the original dark and heavy gold, green and rose.

When the performing arts center was opened in 1984, it was decided to name the Portland Theatre building after Arlene Schnitzer.

The original theater organ and statuary were sold off in an auction on March 26, 1975. During the auction, there was a general outcry from the audience to keep a particular marble statue, called “Surprise” (a nude girl with her hands thrown across her face) in the theater. A hat was passed among the 1200 member audience to take up a collection, and ,233.97 was raised to purchase the statue and keep it in the theater lobby. The statue has a finger missing from a bullet from a box-office robbery in the 1950s.

FROM:apparelnews

The real estate market may be in the dumps, but it’s still a seller’s market in the Los Angeles Fashion District, where demand for showrooms and design space is leading building owners to adapt to the changing marketplace and convert former manufacturing spaces into wholesale showcases.

Only 10 years ago, the California Market Center, then known as the California Mart, and The New Mart were the only showroom buildings in the district. Now, neighboring venues in the Intersection (Ninth and Los Angeles streets) including the Cooper Design Space, have leased up, and the demand for showrooms, especially in the contemporary category, has skyrocketed.

Grip”>http://www.himfr.com/buy-Grip_Tie/”>Grip TieThe West Coast’s hotbed of emerging contemporary labels has fueled much of the growth and demand.

That has led building owners along the periphery to fill in the gap. Newer venues such as the Lady Liberty Building and the Marion Gray Building (now known as the 824 Building) on Los Angeles Street have emerged over the past year as other fill-in locations on Broadway. In addition, the California Market Center, whose contemporary space on the fifth floor is also sold out, will open a new contemporary area in January.

The newer venues have not only helped to accommodate demand but have also brought value and opportunities for up-and-coming companies to the fashion district.

The Lady Liberty Building, located at 843 S. Los Angeles St. and noted for its tile-painted mural of the Statue of Liberty, has brought big showrooms and low rates to the downtown market.

“Why pay to per square foot when you can pay to ,” said Eric M. Martin, who owns The Park showroom with Kristen Aguilera in the Liberty building. The showroom features 6,500 square feet of open floor space, enough to handle Martin’s and Aguilera’s extensive collection of contemporary lines, including AC Jeans, Kain, Shirt by Shirt, Mighty Fin, Converse by John Varvatos, Trunk, UNIF and La Fine. Those lines feature everything from elaborately produced denim to novelty tees.

“We are close enough to [the Intersection of Ninth and Los Angeles streets] to feed off of its traffic. Buyers tend to be curious and like to explore new buildings,” Martin said.

Building manager Empera Arye said she does very little marketing. “It’s been all word of mouth,” she said. “We started with one showroom, and traffic has steadily increased over each market. It’s been getting stronger and stronger.”

The building currently has five large showrooms between 5,500 and 6,500 square feet, with original wood floors, exposed brick and lofted ceilings. “It’s very New York,” described Arye.

“I let the tenants do what they want [with the interiors].”

Martin and Aguilera have been known to host some big parties during markets and special events because of the expansive space they now have.

Two more spaces will become available in about three months as the older tenants vacate the building. Eventually, Arye hopes to open showroom space on the ground floor, which is next to the highly visible The Bank/Hatch showroom at The New Mart.

Other Lady Liberty tenants include The Globe West, the California version of the contemporary New York showroom created by Jeffrey Cayer, featuring labels Bella James, Camilla Marc, Elijah, Eurythmic, Nancy Gaten and Smyth, among others. The Kascade showroom is a recent addition featuring mostly menswear lines including Robert Graham, Takel, Simple Standards, Chip & Pepper University, Proportion of Blue plus Quiksilver women’s.

Across the street at 824 S. Los Angeles Street, the building formerly known as the Marion Gray Building has also launched showrooms within the past year. Five floors of showrooms leased up in a matter of weeks, said the landlord, who declined to be named. Tenants include NSF Clothing, Literature Noir, Alix & Kelly, Lady Muse, Class, Glamourosity, International Cake, Found, The Sundeck and The Apparel Collection.

Like the Lady Liberty building, space here is expansive, running up to 5,000 square feet.

“I love it here because it’s away from competitors and the buyers see only my lines and don’t wander off,” said Jacqueline Lee Rose, owner of the Class showroom, which carries predominantly Australian clothing and accessory labels, including Radenroro, Zayt, Gina Kim, Ghostola, Rebecca Thompson, Lazy Bones and Trophy Wife.

Rose said she does have to do some of her own marketing to get buyers into the showroom. “There’s some good energy here,” she said.

Also returning on the scene is the Gerry Building, located at 910 S. Los Angeles St., which has once again been revamped after an attempt to turn the building into wholesale condominiums was foiled by the lending crunch.

The Gerry’s owner, Hermosa Beach, Calif.–based LaeRoc Funds, is remodeling some of the common areas and plans to open the roof to parties and special events. It’s once again leasing showrooms on an individual basis, both for temporary and permanent space, said LaeRoc’s Kim Benjamin.

The California Market Center’s long-awaited Area 4 contemporary showcase is expected to open in January, about six months after the original planned opening. About 25 showrooms, ranging in size from 900 to 3,500 square feet and featuring contemporary women’s and men’s apparel and accessories, will take up residence in the new section, located in the B building of the CMC.

Construction is underway and permits have been issued, said CMC spokesperson Deborah Levine. The CMC has hired a new leasing executive, Michal Goldvaser, to handle Area 4.

Frank Gehry protégé Eva Sobesky of EIS Studio designed the project, which will feature an atrium extending to the fifth floor. Plans are to create an opening through the fourth floor’s ceiling to connect Area 4 to the building’s fifth-floor contemporary area. One of the features includes a co-op space called “The Gallery,” featuring indie designers who can rent individual racks and handle their own sales. It’s an alternative for newer and up-and-coming designers who may not be able to afford their own showrooms, Levine said. For the CMC, it’s a way to develop emerging talent and foster growth for Los Angeles’ fashion scene.

“Contemporary has been very much in demand. We’re fortunate to open up this space at this time. We anticipate that this will be one of the top locations—if not No. 1—for contemporary space in Los Angeles,” Levine said. An Area 4 Web site will be launched in October and will be accessible by invitation only.

Independent spirit

Some apparel companies are also establishing their own presences in the Fashion District by buying up stand-alone real estate. Earlier this year, Tarrant Apparel Group moved into an 8,000-square-foot corporate showroom at Ninth and Los Angeles streets, where it is now wholesaling its KitsonLA, American Rag, Seven7, Chevignon, Indian Rock Culture and ReRock lines. Hot Tuna International also opened a design center and showroom a few buildings to the north.

Los Angeles–based Roar Clothing later this month will move from South Los Angeles to downtown at 200 E. Ninth St. in suite 301, just above the Tarrant space. Roar, a menswear line, will feature a new showroom as well as design and office space covering 4,000 square feet, said Chief Executive Officer Deepak Vasandani.

“It’s an exciting environment [Downtown Los Angeles]. We’re going with our growth and momentum.”

And more recently, flamboyant accessories designer Tarina Tarantino closed escrow on a building off Broadway and Ninth Street, where she will set up another expansion of her growing business, confirmed a company spokesperson who did not specify the type of business.

Broadway has also been a target for other designers. Susana Mercedes and 12th Street by Cynthia Vincent are now in the landmark Wurlitzer Building, located at 818 S. Broadway. The recent move-ins are leading the Fashion District’s Business Improvement District to annex this portion of Broadway into the Fashion District next year, said Kent Smith, executive director of the Fashion District.

Owners of the L.A. Apparel Mart building, located at 112 W. Ninth St., near the corner of Ninth and Main streets, are also hoping to capitalize by leasing showroom space on its second floor, which was originally developed about 10 years ago.

“It never took off,” said landlord Glen Sitwell. “Nobody was prepared to walk across the street. Unless your whole building is a destination for showrooms, it’s difficult.”

The building houses the popular New Moon restaurant as well as dozens of design and sample-making studios for apparel companies.

Sitwell said his building has been able to capitalize on the displacement of manufacturers who lost their spaces due to the flurry of residential loft projects in the area.

“We’re not along the lines of a New Mart, but we’re not on the level of some of these dilapidated sewing buildings either,” Sitwell said.

And for those who don’t mind being a mile or so away from the main action, the Twin Springs buildings at 433 S. Spring St. are only about 60 percent occupied, said building manager Alfred Padilla. The buildings have been filling up with several Ed Hardy licensees, some of which are maintained by owner Henri Levy, who also handles Spy and Sheragano.

Hong Kong Disneyland is a world-class theme park and resort which is a must visit place on any journey to Hong Kong. This wonder Disney Land is located on scenic Lantau Island and is a 30-minute MTR (Mass Transit Railway) ride from Central Hong Kong. It is located in a setting that could only be offered by the Hong Kong’s Disneyland.

This amazing place offers magical experiences ranging from Broadway style shows, Festival of the Lion King and The Golden Mickey’s, hilarious 3D movie and music adventure at Mickey’s Philharmagic, signature Disney attractions, photo taking with your favourite Disney friends, spectacular fire works and parades for the entire family.

There are four themed lands in the Hong Kong Disneyland, which you will come across when you visit the place. They are the Main Street USA, the Fantasyland, the Adventure land and the Tomorrow land. Each themed land has specialty stores from where you can get memorabilia and souvenirs. They also have various restaurants, which offer a wide variety of food to choose from. All in all Hong Kong Disneyland gives you an unforgettable experience. The transport between the hotels and the park is also included in the tour.

As one of the newest Disneylands in the world, Hong Kong Disneyland is a must-see place because of its special attractions and the inimitable sense of Chinese culture. While walking into Hong Kong Disneyland, you will feel you are in a wonderland. Accompanied by Mickey Mouse and other Disney friends, you will start a fantastic and magical journey. With unique scenic spots and Disney Theme Hotels, you can escape from the real world, and make your dreams come true. The availability of delicious Chinese and Asian food is also an attraction for many visitors and Disney fans.

The first theme park you will come across is Main Street USA. After entering Main Street, you will be amazed by the delicate buildings, dim gas lamp and Paddy Wagon passing by. Antique taxicabs, Disneyland Railroad and the City Hall transports will take you back to America of the early 20th century. There are Chinese elements too in the land.

After the excitement of Main Street USA you will enter the Adventure land. Guided by a brave captain, Jungle River Cruise will take you into the heart of hidden regions. Hippos, cobras, elephants, orangutans and startling jungle events are waiting for you. As an attraction originally conceived by Walt Disney fifty years ago, it has been given an entirely new appearance with exciting 21st century Disney magic especially for Hong Kong Disneyland Park.

Then you will come across the fantasies of the Fantasyland. Cinderella Carrousel, The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh, Sword in the Stone, Mad Hatter Tea Cups, Sleeping Beauty Castle, Dumbo the Flying Elephant and Snow White Grotto to make all your storybook dreams come true. You can also join Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck and many other friends at a dizzying 3-D attraction in Mickey’s Philharmagic.

Leaving the fantasies you will join the Tomorrow land. Screaming in Space Mountain, you will have no time to appreciate the sparkling stars because of the exciting roller coaster. In Buzz Light year Astro Blasters, you can fly in your space capsule and fight against the aliens with your space gun.

After this exciting tour you have a choice of Disney Theme Hotels all with matchless accommodations. Experience the excitement that Disney has been offering for decades. We invite you to come and see Hong Kong’s Disneyland park for entertainment and leisure for the whole family.

Carnival in Brazil: the synonymous of celebration

Since the 1930s, the samba has become synonymous with Carnival in Brazil. Carnival samba is a highly percussive variety of samba, featuring a large drum and percussion ensemble, singing, and rhythmic strumming on Brazil´s ukulele-like cavaquinho. For Brazilians, only one thing can compare with Samba´s popularity- soccer- and in Brazil, the land of soccer, many comparisons are made between the skillful footwork of a soccer star and the quick steps of a samba dancer.

Jersey Boys Broadway

]]>

A splashing hit on Broadway. Jersey Boys is a story that is too good to be true. Jersey Boys, four boys make a journey of success and fame that every young throbbing heart wishes to make. They raised form no where from the streets of New York City (nyc) and filled the screen of worlds media with their melodies and charm.

Four blue collared boys soared to the heights of fame in pop music, wrote their own words and invented their own best tunes and stunned the world with their performance in theater and sold more than 175 million records worldwide. And that all happened before they turned 30. Wow! Can you believe that? Amazing, isnt it.

This cosmological performance of the hit Broadway musical based on the life and music of Frankie Valli & The 4 Seasons. The original cast features: John Lloyd Young as Frankie Valli, Christian Hoff as Tommy DeVito, Daniel Reichard as Bob Gaudio, and J. Robert Spencer as Nick Massi. The performances involve the #1 hits “Rag Doll,” “Walk Like A Man,” “Big Girls Don’t Cry,” “Sherry,” and “December, 1963 (Oh, What A Night).” Produced by original 4 Seasons member Bob Gaudio. This brand new musical includes their beloved hit songs “Sherry”, “Big Girls Don’t Cry”, “Rag Doll”, “Oh What a Night” and “Can’t Take My Eyes Off of You” just to name a few.

There have been many shows made based on the bands story but none of them were quite inspiring or gripping. Which didnt intrigue any big gathering of spectators but now the latest show is seem like what the story of Jersey Boys (http://www.ticketnest.com) needed. The show includes the singers that actually sound like the original ones. That really put life in the show and made it interesting and a hit splash. The individual singers portraying the characters are really good at their work and sound and look like a true replica of the original singers. Especially the writer really took care of giving Marshall Brickman and Rick Elice likeliness of sassy dialogues of street kids in the urban wastelands of New Jersey evolving as pop gods enshrined in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

The book about the singers is written by Marshall Brickman and Rick Elice. The music as well as lyrics is given by Bob Gaudio and Bob Crewe. These four characters really steel the hearts pf the viewers with their pulsating voices and awesome acting. The show won four 2006 Tony awards whereas it was nominated for eight. It bought home Best Musical Winner, Lead Actor in a Musical – Winner.

Walnut Street Theater’s Oliver

Presented at Walnut Street Theater now through January 10, 2010, is One of Broadway’s most beloved classic musicals of all time, Oliver!

Synopsis:
This show brings to life Charles Dickens’ timeless characters with its ever-popular story of the boy who asked for more. The sensational score is full of Lionel Bart’s irresistible songs including “Food, Glorious Food;” “Consider Yourself;” “You’ve Got to Pick-a-Pocket or Two;” “I’d Do Anything;” “Oom Pah Pah;” “As Long As He Needs Me” and many more. Oliver! promises to be one of the most spectacular holiday musicals to ever grace the Walnut’s stage.
Tom from Walnut Street Theater was kind enough to provide me with two tickets to come review their most recent main stage show.

Let me start with the set design and props. The scenery was excellent and captured the essence of Dicken’s Victorian London, or how I picture it to be. While I have not been to London myself, it’s how I envisioned Victorian London in Dickens’ time.

Secondly, the acting was impressive. I was particularly impressed with several of the characters/actors. Hugh Panaro (pictured below with Sam Preston/Oliver) was a stroke of genius as Fagin. He did a fabulous job, and was very entertained by all the mannerisms of Fagin. I was reminded of Johnny Depp’s Character in the Pirates of the Caribbean film. They were both whimsical and hilariously funny characters that make you love them instantly. Who can resist a long haired man who makes you laugh non-stop?

I was also impressed with Nancy (pictured below), played by Janine Divita, and Artful Dodger, played by RJ Fattore. Both of these actors possessed very strong stage presence and both singing and acting ability. The character of Oliver, played by Sam Preston, on the other hand, was extremely weak and paled in comparison to the other children and other actors in this musical, but he shows promise.

Third, the theater itself is not overly showy, and has an air of intimacy and quaintness. Downstairs are small tables, surrounded by brick walls, mimicking a coffee shop, inviting patrons to take a seat and chat over a cup of coffee/tea while they wait for the show to begin. On the second floor are walls lined with framed photographs, of what I assume are former actors and actresses who have preformed at the Walnut Street Theater. Among these photographs were Tia and Tamara Lowry, from TV’s “Sister Sister” and their little brother Tahj Lowry from TV’s “Smart Guy”.

Overall, I would give this show a 4 out of 5. I was impressed with everything about the show, sadly, except the lead character’s acting and vocals. It’s still well worth the trip into Philadelphia to see this show!

The Broadway Production of the Producers Hits the Funny Bone

The Producers has been enjoying a nice run on Broadway since it’s opening on April 19th 2001 at the St. James Theatre located at 246 West 44th Street. The production is considered an original musical comedy and critics as well as audiences agree the Mel Brooks classic holds up it’s end of the laughter which is expected and promised. The show runs for two hours and forty minutes with one intermission.

Based on the Mel Brook’s movie, of the same name, which played in 1968 the story tells of a down and out producer who writes the worst screen play in the history of movie script writing and then continues to attempt of conning two old ladies out of two million dollars.

The hilarious Broadway power duo of Nathan Lane and Matthew Broderick team up to play the classic characters of Max Biaystock and accountant Leo Bloom. Both actors received acclaim for their work with the production and the slapstick humor, which is often just plain silly is pulled of with perfection throughout the brilliant show.

The storyline of the show is based in New York around the 1959 time period, in which Max creates the worst screen play ever to be written, this of course was done purposely. Max wants the script to be a failure in order to back out of having to pay his investors, and con everyone out of their money.

The comedy begins right away when you think what could the worst screen play ever written possibly be named? Well, Springtime For Hitler sure seems to have the name for a bad screenplay. What could be worst, or really more funny is how the bill is advertised, as a gay romp through World War II. With all this said it seems doomed from the start, just like Max and Leo expect, but who could ever guess that it would soon become a huge hit.

Now there are very special comedic moments which occur throughout these events, and both Lane and Broderick really play the silly slapstick comedy of Mel Brook’s extremely well. The singing and music also adds a nice touch to the humor and story. The story then moves on into the main plot as the two con men are forced to try and take advantage of two older women for the two million dollars they set out to rob from the investors.

The show is perfect for adults who enjoy silly and more slapstick humor. The comedy is not very deep or written with intellectual humor nor was that the intent, more of the silly little things which hit your funny bone hard and fast and throw the laughs out. For a light hearted night out on Broadway and some real good laughs The Producers will most likely provide exactly what is advertises and probably more laughs then you can handle. With 11 Tony’s in 2001 including best musical score, best director and best musical you cannot go wrong. Broadway Producer show tickets are selling on average for seventy-five dollars

London is the capital of garden theft in the UK, with thirty four percent of people having something stolen. Sadly, while people go to great lengths to protect their belongings in their home, they are not so careful with items of worth in the garden. On the whole, people forget to lock sheds and garages, making their belongings easy pickings for thieves all over the country.

Tops tips are to be vigilant if you see someone lurking around who shouldn’t be, and keep garden ladders and tools locked in the shed with a padlock while they aren’t in use. Even if you are in the garden, be careful, as an opportunist burglar will pinch anything if given a chance.gnomes
